Who we are

Doug Patterson, CEO Forest Products Certification Group, LLCDoug Patterson, CEO of Forest Products Certification Group,LLC leads the team of FSC certification specialists.   Doug's history with the Forest Stewardship Council and its certification program dates back to the formation of FSC in Vermont in the 1990s.  His knowledge of FSC standards is among the best in the United States.  For you, this means that he can ensure that your company has the most practical and affordable FSC components.

Doug and his team have the ability to work hands-on, looking at your individual company to make the most of FSC certification opportunities specific to your business.  While our people working with you are called "Internal Auditors", they function more as close advisors.  Doug's goal is to keep group members comfortably up to standard.  Feedback from our group members has consistently shown Doug and our other internal auditors to be well received by businesses across the country - readily accessible, technically competent and pleasurable with which to work.

Doug has acted as a Lead Auditor conducting FSC CoC and CW audits since 1999 and SFI/PEFC CoC audits since 2007. He is currently offering consulting services to companies interested in becoming CoC and Controlled Wood certified and for existing certified companies to develop written procedures, conduct training, and to assist in resolving corrective actions and non-conformities.

He is one of the few who conducts FSC CWRA (controlled wood risk assessments) for sourcing in the United States, Canada, Europe and elsewhere as needed.

He has developed procedures and supplier evaluations (SBE) for the newly created Sustainable Biomass Partnership (SBP) certification for wood pellets.

In addition, he works with architects, builders, project managers with LEED wood-based credits, sourcing green building products, conduct training on green building credits and materials and work with companies interested in sustainable sourcing of forest-based materials and sustainability issues in general as they relate to forest products.

Being on the cutting edge, he is working on wood alternatives such as hemp and in developing hemp materials for construction, food, and health.

The Forest Stewardship Council

The Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC ®) is an international certification system that recognizes the highest levels of environmentally and socially responsible forest management. FSC certification is a voluntary, market-based system that allows companies to promote their products as deriving from well-managed forests. By holding an FSC® Chain of Custody (CoC) certificate, companies earn the right to market and sell products as being FSC ® Certified and to affiliate themselves with the Forest Stewardship Council ®.

To earn FSC Chain of Custody certification, companies must develop and implement procedures that cover all of the elements of the relevant FSC standard. Companies must account for their purchase of certified material, their inventory, their manufacturing procedures, determination of FSC ® claims, use of logos, as well as sales, invoicing and record-keeping procedures.

The standards allow for a variety of different systems and, therefore, FSC® CoC programs range from very simple to very complex, depending on the nature of the operation. For instance, there are separate CoC standards addressing companies with multiple facilities, the outsourcing of production, “controlled wood” and the verification of recycled content.

The Forest Products Certification Group, LLC has earned Forest Stewardship Council® (FSC®) Chain of Custody certification from Scientific Certification Systems, one of the world’s leading FSC® certifiers and one of FSC’s founding members.
